5 Wedding Songs to Skip for your MA Wedding

Annie Carey and Jeff Rosick's wedding at Langdon Farms in Portland OregonLittle known fact: DJs can’t always read minds. But that’s why we created the Wedding DJ Checklist to help us figure out what songs to play and most certainly what songs NOT to play on your wedding day in Massachusetts.

Perhaps it is a religious matter, or your grandparents will be there and you just don’t want to make them feel uncomfortable. Maybe you just simply hate any song that involves a hoedown or the electric slide. We get it, you have your preference and we want to make that happen. We have found five songs that are brought to you by The Knot  from their list of 15. I’m sure there are plenty more, but here are just a few to consider.

1. “The Cha Cha Slide” by DJ Casper

Why you should skip it: According to The Knot, it’s better to let your guests come up with their own dance moves instead of a step-by-step group dance lesson. Not to mention that you probably have heard this song more than you would have liked to.

2. “Hot in Herre” by Nelly

Why you should skip it: We have to agree with The Knot on this one. This overplayed song that talks about “juices” and stripping down to your birthday suit may not be the best suit for your family and younger children that are attending.

3. “Chicken Dance”

Why you should skip it: Listen, this song was great when you were rollerskating at age 9. But, it’s time to put that one to bed. Not to mention it’s not very flattering while you are shaking your arms and legs around in that beautiful dress you spent a pretty penny on.

4. “Stayin Alive” by Bee Geesstayin alive wedding

Why you should skip it: The Knot nailed this one on the head. If you can tell me one other line from the song and show me one other dance move, than I’ll go ahead and let you have this one. Most likely, not many do so it’s ok to leave this one behind.

5. “YMCA” by Village People

Why you should skip it: Just because the entire world knows this song, doesn’t mean it needs to be played at your wedding. Unless you are hosting your wedding at a football stadium, maybe think about skipping this one.

To check out the rest of the list, visit The Knot’s 15 Wedding Songs to Skip on their website. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for other songs you don’t want to hear to add them to your list of songs NOT to play at your wedding in Massachusetts, our DJs at Marx Entertainment Marx Entertainment will understand.

Your Wedding DJ Checklist In Massachusetts

You would think having a DJ in Massachusetts would be a simple concept, and for many it is. In order for DJs to create the perfect set for your reception, we need to get the basics down first. There are always the songs you want to hear (or don’t want to hear) or the specific songs played for specific scenarios, like the first dance or the cake cutting. We’ve broken down the list to simplify some of the basics you would need for your wedding day DJ checklist.

Create your Wedding Day Schedule

Make sure to write down the main events that are happening and what times you anticipate them to happen. Remember, they may not all happen according to plan on the actual day of your Massachusetts wedding.

  1. Wedding ceremony starts
  2. Wedding ceremony ends
  3. Guests begin arriving at the reception
  4. Bridal party arrives at the reception
  5. Reception events
  6. Reception Ends

wedding dj in massachusetts

Now include your detailed list of events that are happening at your wedding reception, such as:

  1. Bridal party entrance
  2. Bride and Groom entrance
  3. Guests eat
  4. Bride and groom’s first dance
  5. Father-daughter dance
  6. Mother-son dance
  7. Dance floor is open to everyone
  8. Cake cutting
  9. Toasts
  10. Bouquet/garter toss

If you are having a bridal party entrance, make sure to have a list of all of the names and how you would like them to be announced. It’s beneficial to include any particular pronunciations of names that may be more difficult than others. You can also include what role they play in the wedding or in your family’s life.

Now is the fun part. Include all particular songs you want for each special event you having at your reception. Each part of the reception is a special moment for you and your family, so we want to make sure that your DJ gets it just right.

What not to play at your wedding

Everyone has those particular songs they genuinely don’t want played at their wedding. There may also be specific genres that you don’t want to hear played either. Make a list of what types of music you do like and what types you don’t. Be as specific as possible. The more we know, the better the music will be that is suitable for your guests.

Let us know your DJ preferences

Your DJ will let you know what the normal attire and behaviors are at the wedding, but if you have special preferences, feel free to let us know. Some of these behaviors may include:

  1. DJ attire
  2. Dance props
  3. Singling out guests who aren’t dancing
  4. Being humorous or strictly professional
  5. Taking requests from guests at the wedding
  6. Talking and socializing with the guests as the announcer
  7. Taking requests from the bridal party

These are just a few of some ideas for behavioral types at your wedding. Perhaps you want someone who is just going to play music and not have any announcements or interaction with guests. Maybe you are wanting to have a more laid-back reception where the DJ doesn’t need to be dressed up formally. You let us know what you want, and we will provide for your Massachusetts wedding.

If you have any questions regarding some of our tips, feel free to leave a comment below, talk to us on our social media accounts, or give us a call. We want to hear back from you!

DIY Photo Booths May Not Be The Way To Go for Your Connecticut Wedding

photo booth connecticut

There has been a lot of hype about DIY photo booths for weddings in connecticut. While this may seem like a fun and affordable idea for your wedding, it may not be the best approach.

Picture this: The groom has decided to build his own photo booth because his bride-to-be is dying to have one. In order to save money and time, he finds an article online to help him create one. Sounds familiar right?

If you aren’t using a professional photo booth, it may be more of a hassle than it is time and money saving. It could actually be the complete opposite. A lot of problems can occur if you try to do it on your own. We want to share with you some of the issues that can arise when using your DIY photo booth to prepare you for what could happen.

  1. If you are using a digital point wedding dj photo booth connecticutand shoot camera, there is the possibility of it malfunctioning, the battery running out, or the camera could break.
  2. Drinking may be happening at your wedding, and there may be those few people who take it a little too far. Everyone has those friends, as we know. This could cause for the backdrop to break or any of the particular equipment as well.
  3. Setting up the camera is a pain on your wedding day since you don’t want to have to worry about too much of the setting up process. You already have enough to think about on your big day.
  4. Who is going to be taking the pictures? Perhaps you will be telling people to use the timer which could be an issue by malfunctioning or for guests who are unsure of how to use it.
  5. The memory card could run out and you don’t want to be responsible for having to replace throughout the reception.

These are just some of the few issues that could arise when using a DIY photo booth. Think about having to be the person responsible for fixing any mishaps during your wedding day. You still have thirty people left to say hello and thank you too, dances to attend to and celebrating to occur with your new wife or groom. Try to make your wedding day as stress free as possible by using a professional photo booth renter, like Marx Entertainment in Connecticut. You will be happy you decided to save yourself the stress, the time and even the money for any malfunction with your camera.

Tips for the Groom on His Wedding Day

Nashville, TN Soft Pink And Gray Wedding photographed by Kristin Sweeting

As the tradition goes, the wedding day is normally for the bride. In actuality, it’s a day to celebrate the joining of two people preparing to spend the rest of their lives together. It can’t get much more romantic than that. You can find tips for the bride on your wedding day, but it isn’t often that people hand out tips to the groom on his big day. We’ve compiled a list of some of the basics from various wedding professionals.

Wedding Day Grooming

You want to look your best on your big day, just like anyone else. Make sure you are getting the final touches to your grooming. You can get your hair cut a few days before the actual wedding, but on the day of, spend the morning doing any waxing, shaving and other “manscaping” that you feel necessary. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have a clean shaven, non-stubbled face or taming your eyebrows. Make sure you are doing these the day of to avoid any five o’clock shadows or have prickly hairs that could impede on that magical kiss as you become husband and wife.

Give your bride-to-be a gift

Brownie points will definitely be given if you give a gift to your bride on the day of the wedding. Arrange someone to give it to her if you plan on maintaining the tradition of not seeing the bride until the ceremony. This could be jewelry, flowers, or even better, something that resembles your life together. Think of something sentimental that will really make her remember all of the reasons why she wants to spend the rest of her life with you.

Have your own emergency kit

You never know what could happen on your big day which is why an emergency kit is always necessary. Make sure to include a needle, thread, dental hygiene essentials, extra buttons, shoe shine nail clippers or pain reliever. There is always the chance that even the smallest thing could go wrong when you want your big day to be perfect, so don’t chance it. Be prepared for the tiniest rip or the slightest of headaches.

Eat something before the ceremony

We all know that if there is alcohol at your wedding, the groomsmen may want to calm your nerves with a celebratory beverage. Eat a small meal or a snack to make sure that you aren’t drinking on an empty stomach. You don’t want to feel like you are at a tailgate party as you wait at the front of the alter for your bride to walk down. Not to mention, if you drank the night before in celebration it can help you if you have been drinking more than normal. No one can blame you, it’s all about the celebration!

There are many of the small tips and tricks that people share about their wedding day. There is normally just as much to think about for the groom as there is the bride. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either. It’s okay if you don’t want to let it show that you are nervous, that is why you can have your best man help you with all of these essentials. He is your best man of course.

Wedding Reception Music: A Band vs. DJs

marxentertainmentWhen it comes to planning your Massachusetts wedding, there is no doubt that music is essential for setting the mood for your guests. A wedding is one of the happiest celebrations you will ever experience, so it’s important to get every step right. A lot of people want to know what the difference is between having a band and having a DJ is. So we’ve decided to share some of the basics with you to help you decipher what you are looking for.

Creating the Environment

As we said before, the music you choose will set the entire ambiance for you wedding. Are you looking for a more rustic, Mumford and Sons type of theme? Or are you going to want your guests to bring out the serious dance moves for your guests? DJs will deliver the music you are looking for regardless of your theme, where as live bands may only be able to provide one particular type of music the entire evening.

Keeping with your Budget

DJs will normally save you money when you are trying to stay within a certain budget. Depending on the size of the band, you will need to pay them per person, per hour and will all depend based upon the day of the week or the time of year. DJs normally have a fixed price that may vary slightly, but you will only have to worry about one person to tip out at the end of the night.

What is Suitable for your Venue

The size of your venue will also be a factor when deciding between a band and a DJ. DJs can adjust and fit to any type of venue. Bands will need a larger space and some venues may not allow for large speakers to be set up that they would need. Make sure to check with your venue about what electrical power supplies are available and if there are any restrictions you need to be aware of ahead of time.

Variety

The great thing about having a DJ is that they can set up any playlist you are looking for. If you have an eclectic taste in music, a DJ would be the best bet. You won’t have to worry about the lulls in between each song and the possibility of guests not being able to be involved. Bands may only have one type of music they are going to be playing for the entire night.

When it comes to having a band or a DJ, it all depends on what you are looking for as bride and groom for your guests. Marx Entertainment will work with you no matter what type of music it is you are looking to play and, since our DJs are mobile, we can work with every venue and environment that you may need. Keep us in mind when booking your music for your Massachusetts wedding!

Tips For Making Your Massachusetts Wedding Seating Chart

So you are making your last minute seating chart for your wedding in Massachusetts. How do you decide where you should sit your parents who don’t exactly get along? When did you think it was a good idea to sit Uncle Patrick at the table with all of your old college friends? Should you even invite your college friends? It’s understandable that this can become more of a hectic task than you envisioned.

To help you out, we have come up with a few helpful tips for deciphering what to do in a situation like this, or simply how to avoid the wedding seating chart madness in the first place.

Tips to create your wedding seating chart

Have an open floor concept. Perhaps you are only having hors d’oeuvres at your wedding. If there is no actual sit-down dinner, have high top bar tables for your guests to utilize if they wish. Include some extra seating like couches, benches or chairs with your high top tables and your guests won’t feel the heat of an obligated scenario as they try to figure out where to sit.

Assign tables, but don’t assign the seats. Don’t over think everyone’s particular seat. Just provide each guest with a table number of about 8 to 10 seats. This will give your guests the chance to choose themselves. Another thing to remember is that your wedding guests won’t be sitting the entire time. They may want to get up and dance, grab a drink or mingle with old family members they haven’t seen in a long time. So the seats won’t be a permanent fixture for the reception.

When in doubt, let your guests decide. We just mentioned letting your guests decide the seats at their designated table. But what if you didn’t decide which table they sat at? Chaos wouldn’t erupt causing a giant melt down. If you truly can’t decide on where to sit people, you can always make them choose for themselves. That is one more thing that you can check off of your wedding to-do list.

Mix the outgoing with the shy. This may seem a bit unorthodox, but it is a good option to get the good times out of people. You know some particular family members or friends that are relatively shy. They don’t like to get out of their shell very often. It just so happens that on your partner’s side of the family is your extremely outgoing twin cousins. By sitting them together, it could allow for a conversation to arise and allow your guests to feel a little more comfortable.

Let the people who are most likely to start dancing to sit near the dance floor! Our DJs at Marx Entertainment are amazing at getting the hype going, but sometimes people don’t necessarily want to be the first one to jump the gun and start dancing. Get those people who will be first in line to dance the chance to jump out of their seats and onto the floor.

Tips when you are making your wedding seating chart

Keep the children together. Kids are going to have more fun if they are sitting together. Provide a children’s table that has crayon’s, crafts or other games for them to participate in.

Don’t forget to provide a seat for your vendors. People often forget that your vendors are going to be working the event for a few hours. Have some extra seating for them because they need to eat too! Vendors are going to be there to please and serve you, but as a kind gesture for what they are doing for your wedding, why not give them a seat to rest their feet for a few minutes?

The size of your wedding DOES matter. A key factor to remember when planning your wedding is the size! The amount of people at your wedding will determine the size of your venue. The size of your venue will determine how many tables you will need and what type. Will you need round or rectangular tables to fit everyone? Should your tables seat 6 or 10 people? Take your guest list into consideration when making these types of decisions.

When it comes down to your wedding seating chart, there are definitely a lot of things to consider. The most important part is not to over think it and make a decision that will be right for you and what will make the day less stressful. If that means having your guests choose the seats or for them having the comfort of knowing that your cousins who had a falling out years prior won’t be near each other, do do what is going to be most comfortable for you.

5 Tips for Your Massachusetts Wedding Day that Wedding Magazines Won’t Tell You

event-planner-wedding-speech-boston

Let’s face it, planning a wedding in a busy area such as Massachusetts can be hectic. In the midst of planning your event, you may miss a few details that could be key in making it a success or a huge stress. We’ve compiled just a few that you may not have thought of just yet that not all wedding magazines are going to share with you.

1. Where should the speakers stand?

If you are having a toast at your wedding, make sure not to have the speakers stand in front of the DJ’s table. It’s not always the most appealing for photographs. You can always create a nice background or use one of the great backdrops that Marx Entertainment has.

2. Prepare the night before your wedding.

The day before your wedding, take the time to prepare what you need for the next day. Lay out your morning clothes, pack an emergency kit, organize the pay envelopes and vendor tips so you can dedicate the evening to relax. This way, the morning of your wedding, you won’t need to be running around trying to remember if you packed the extra pair of comfortable shoes for the reception.

3. Have one person be in charge of your photos.

Designate someone you trust to collect all of the photos from your big day. Yes, you have a professional photographer that is catching the key moments of your day. However, you may still want all of those photographs from your friends and family of moments you weren’t around to see because you were too busy saying “Thank you” to your grandparents. Why not try an Instagram hashtag to use for your event with a slide show? Yes, we can help you out with that!

wedding-photos-boston-dj4. Wait to say “Thank you!”

Hold off on writing your thank you letters until after the wedding and the honeymoon. If you have a registry, it’s obvious that a particular person bought you a new blender, but the preparation for your big day came from the help of others. Maybe your cousin was extra help with the last minute preparations that you wouldn’t have been able to get done any other way. You want to customize your “Thank you” cards and this way can personally thank people for the contributions they made for your perfect wedding day.

5. Don’t let your friend be the announcer.

Designate your DJ to be the announcer for your wedding. You may have a friend that has already offered to do the honors, but what if they feel like enjoying the festivities too? Leave it to someone who is dedicated specifically to the task and has had experience doing it.

Marx Entertainment has had experience with thousands of New England events, so we know there will be some ‘off-beat’ things to remember. Feel free to let us help you plan your Massachusetts wedding and make it the success you’ve always dreamt it to be.
